 THANKSGIVING DAY 2009

BIBTF Thanksgiving Day was marked by two special services held at Orange
Street Congregational Church, London on Saturday 10th October 2009.

It was a pleasure to welcome over 50 people at the 2009 BIBTF Thanksgiving Day services held in central London. Despite the recession the number attending was not reduced compared with 2008. We did miss a good number of our members and supporters who sent their apologies, but were blessed to enjoyed fellowship with other friends (old and new) who made up the number. Many had travelled long distances (including from the West Country, the North of England and Northern Ireland).

The first service (12.00-1.15 pm) chaired by BIBTF Trustee Mr Brian Davies heard an encouraging address entitled ‘Israel in God’s Eternal Plan’ by Pastor Eric Briggs from Northern Ireland. He emphasised the wonderful wisdom and foresight of God in planning to allow for man’s freewill and rebellion while always achieving His original purpose for Israel and His Kingdom.

A free buffet lunch was served in the crypt where a good selection of literature was available on the bookstall (some free – including copies of the latest issue of Bible Truth magazine, Issue 256 Oct-Dec 2009). The meal break was clearly enjoyed, judging by the level of conversation, but seemed too short to meet all the friends present before the call to move upstairs again for the next meeting.

The second session (2.15-4.15 pm) was chaired by BIBTF Secretary Mr Paul Boyd-Lee. We were delighted to welcome as a guest speaker Mr Chris Richards from the Protestant Alliance, to give a powerpoint presentation entitled ‘Celebrating the 500th anniversary of John Calvin’s birth. The Reformation – the answer to today’s predicament.’ His illustrated lecture was much appreciated and enjoyed. The Chairman commented on the importance of the Protestant Alliance and encouraged all present to support its witness.

A Thanksgiving Day offering was received during the singing of a harvest hymn. We thank all those who supported the work in this way. A concluding address entitled ‘The Economy of God’ was given by Dr Michael Bennett (BIBTF President). He contrasted the failing economy of man (which cries ‘I want’) based on a love of money, with the better alternative (which says ‘Thy will be done’) based on love. The principals of responsibility, restitution, tithing and timely debt release were considered. [NB. An article on ‘Giving’ by Dr Michael Bennett is included in the Oct-Dec, 2009 issue 256 of Bible Truth magazine.]

As is our custom the day was concluded with the the Aaronic blessing before most were able to stay on for tea served in the crypt. Many thanks to all those who helped with music, food, literature and in other ways to make the day enjoyable and run smoothly.

Numbers 6: 23-27
‘… On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.’

God willing we look forward to meeting again at Orange Street on 8 May 2010 for our AGM and Bible convention. Please put this date in your diary now if you hope or plan to come, and please pray for God’s blessing on it. Watch this site for details of meeting times, speakers and titles to be announced. Please try and bring a friend. If everyone brought a friend we could have over 100 next time!
